Introduction

We are delighted to be opening applications for this long-awaited and prestigious project: a performance of Brahms’s German Requiem in Bayreuth, Germany. Bayreuth is best known for Wagner, but this project takes place as the city embraces its wider musical heritage and prepares to launch a brand new world-class concert hall. The hall is nearing completion and our Requiem concert will form part of it's 2026 inaugral season. It is a rare privilege for an amateur choir to be given an opportunity to perform this deeply rooted German masterpiece in such a venue.

The Requiem will,  of course,  be sung in the original German with full orchestra and we are seeking a strong, balanced choir of experienced amateur singers. Places will be offered by application, allowing us to form a confident and well-matched ensemble. Recruitment will take place over several weeks, so please don’t worry if you don’t hear immediately — every application will be considered individually, carefully and confidentially.

Further details

There will be five days of rehearsals with plenty of time off to explore Bayreuth and the surrounding area. We will also arrange  a guided tour of Wagner's celebrated Festspielhaus  and at least one other optional outing.

For those who are interested, there will be an optional extra day in Munich (which most people will fly to) on the Sunday before the course starts, with time for a little tourism, dinner at the famous Hofbrauhaus, a night in a centrally located hotel with breakfast and onward transfer by private coach to Bayreuth the next day.

To help us get up to speed with the notes, there will be a rehearsal in London on the afternoon of Sunday 11 October which singers are strongly encouraged to attend. This extra rehearsal will be directed by Jeremy Jackman, and is an important part of the preparation for our concert.

We are offering a choice of two hotels in Bayreuth - both very centrally located and a short walk away from our rehearsal room - the 4 star Rheingold and the 4 star+ H4.

Singers can check in any time from 2.00 pm on Monday 26 October, explore Bayreuth,  then join their fellows for dinner and a few introductions. Rehearsals begin on Tuesday morning.

This part is up to you and is not included in the course fee. The nearest airports are Nuremberg and Munich - which is very well served from the UK - so most people will choose to fly to Munich and travel on to Bayreuth by fast train or avail of our optional overnight Munich package with coach transfer.

The course fee is payable in two parts: a deposit of £295, payable on acceptance of a place, and a further £1295 payable on invoice eight weeks before we depart. This covers tuition, your contribution to the concert costs, six nights in the four-star Rheingold Hotel (based on 2 sharing)and three 3-course dinners with wine. There will be a single occupancy supplement of £250

Upgrading to the four-star plus H4 Hotel will cost an additional £300 per person sharing with a single occupancy supplement of £350. The cost of the Munich package with dinner, hotel and onward coach transfer to Bayreuth will be £195 per person sharing or £250 for single occupancy.
